Engine foundation calculations
The structure between the engine and the hull.
An engine foundation carries static weight, thrust, torque reaction and dynamic loads into the hull. We design engine beds and foundations for main engines, gensets, gearboxes and waterjets, and verify their strength against the applicable class rules and manufacturer requirements.
Foundation stiffness matters as much as strength. We support resilient mount selection with the engine manufacturer's data and check that the foundation does not resonate with the machinery it carries. For repowers, we assess whether the existing structure can take the new engine, and what it needs if not.
What we deliver
- Engine bed and foundation design for engines, gearboxes, gensets and waterjets
- Strength calculations for static, thrust, torque and dynamic loads
- Resilient mount selection support and load distribution check
- Foundation stiffness and natural frequency check
- Foundation drawings and calculation report for class submission
Typical inputs we need
- Engine and gearbox installation drawings and manufacturer data
- Surrounding hull structure drawings
- Mount type and arrangement, if already selected
- Applicable class rules or design standard
Questions
Can you check an existing foundation for a repower?
Yes. We assess the existing structure against the new engine's loads and mounting interface and specify any reinforcement needed.
Do you cover waterjet and gearbox foundations too?
Yes. Waterjet thrust and gearbox reactions are part of the same load path, so we treat them together with the engine.
